The Coppersmith Barbet is a beautiful bird. When you look at it carefully, you notice the many colors that adorn its form. You can’t help but admire its beauty and thank the almighty for creating such magnificence.

I’ve been fortunate that one Coppersmith Barbet has made the Gulmohar tree in front of our home its home! I have been watching him almost every day. My observations led me to write a poem on this wonderful member of the avian species.  I hope you enjoy reading it.

The Curious Coppersmith Barbet

A Coppersmith Barbet
lives on the Gulmohar tree.
Each day I watch him,
As he goes on a berry eating spree.

He is green,
With crimson on his head and neck.
Small insects and termites
He loves to peck.

He jumps from tree to tree
in search of food.
Curiously he peeks into holes
in his quest for all things good.

On finding water in a tree hole,
he drinks and bathes in delight.
If he sees another bird,
he chases him till he is out of sight.

There is a reason
behind his name.
His call and the hammer of the Coppersmith,
Both sound the same!

I often sit down
 to listen to his song.
I wonder what he sings about
all day long.

It occurs to me,
that he sings in glee.
He expresses his joy
because he is grateful to be free.
