Today is Mother’s Day. Across the world, people wish their mother and try to make this day as special as possible. But isn’t this relationship exceptionally special, one that needs to be celebrated everyday? Shouldn’t we be mindful enough to respect this most sacred relationship?
A mother is the most precious gift of all! She brings us into this world and takes care of us. She gives us all her love and protects us. While we may be fortunate enough to receive the love of a lot of people later in life, there is no love like hers.
Every relationship is filled with expectations. It is only mother’s love that is unconditional. Her love is the most selfless of all. She makes our house a home and teaches us the importance of family. She is our first and best teacher. She is our moral compass. Whatever we may do, we know if it was the right thing to do based on what our mother taught us.
She is the one we turn to in happiness and sorrow. She fills us with hope in our moments of despair. Khalil Gibran has so wonderfully captured the essence of what a mother means to us in the quote given below.
The mother is everything – she is our consolation in sorrow, our hope in misery, and our strength in weakness. She is the source of love, mercy, sympathy, and forgiveness.
-Khalil Gibran
Many a time, we may be angry with our mother for a trivial reason. We can all recall how angry we were when mother tried to correct us in our growing up years , especially when we were teenagers. I remember having argued endlessly with my mother. I am sure that we can all relate to this experience. As we grow up, we tend to feel that we know more than our parents. When we become parents, we believe we know more about parenting than our parents! We may say that ‘I know what is best for me and my children.’ We could have a difference of opinion and believe that we are right. In due course of time, as we grow older, we come to realize that mother was right.
Sometimes mothers can be overwhelmed by all the work that they need to do. We may be far too busy in our lives to notice it. Just take a moment to check on your mother and see if you could free up some of her time. We could do this in small ways by doing some of the household chores, running errands for her, cooking a meal or sometimes just doing all our work ourselves! Give her time to pursue a hobby or do whatever she wants to.
Let us respect our mother for all that she does for us. Let us give her her due for she is wiser and more experienced in certain matters than us. Let us always remember the many sacrifices she has made to give us the best in life. Let us nurture this ‘most precious of all’ relationships with all our love everyday. It is said that we can never repay the debt that we owe to our parents, in particular our mother. Let us be there for our mother, always and return her unconditional love. This Mother’s Day let us reaffirm our resolve to take care of our mother and love her unconditionally.
Happy Mother’s Day!
